2026 Black Jar Honey Contest Rules

Entries must be submitted by a beekeeper and be pure unadulterated honey produced by his or her bees. We do not accept honey from commercial buyers or packers.

  1. Complete an entry form
    • Contestant may enter more than one variety of honey, but must fill out an entry form and pay an entry fee for each separate Black Jar entry.
  2. Pay $15.00 fee
    • Entry fees may be paid online (after submitting entry form) or mailed along with honey shipment.
  3. Submit three (3) pounds of honey in ONE of the following ways:
    • Ship three (3) one pound jars (1 lb.=.46Kg, 3lb.=1.37Kg).
    • One (1) jar MUST NOT have any  labels or markings, and two (2) jars must have the beekeeper’s label.
    • Ship three (3) pounds in a nonbreakable container (Three pounds is approximately (1)U.S. quart or European liter by volume) and our organization will transfer the honey into three (3) one pound Queenline jars. YOU MUST include two (2) labels for us to apply to two jars. Labels should be no more than 2.5” x 3”  (63mm x 76mm).

  5. Honey shipments MUST BE postmarked by July 31, 2026.
  6. Contest winners must provide payment information within 90 days of initial contact. Failure to do so may result in forfeiture of any prize.

General Questions

The Black Jar Contest Finals will take place on a TBD date at a new event created by Center For Honeybee Research in Asheville, NC.Honey shipments MUST BE postmarked by the deadline: July 31, 2026.

Grand Prize: $2,500 USD, a blue ribbon, your name added to the official trophy and the Center for Honeybee Research website—and bragging rights recognized around the world.
New this year: A Top 3 category, with $500 USD awarded to each finalist.

We will also award $150 each to winners in ten categories – which will be determined based upon the qualities and quantity of entries received.

There are several airports in our region. The three we suggest are: Asheville Regional (15.7 miles to Renaissance AVL Hotel), Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (78.4 miles to Renaissance AVL Hotel), and Charlotte Douglas International Airport (119 miles to Renaissance AVL Hotel).No. It can be from any year or season.

Yes. The Black Jar is an international contest and we accept honey from bees from all over the world.Yes. Many beekeepers produce seasonal varietals that differ in taste and choose to enter more than one variety.

Each entry requires a separate fee of $15.
